The world is reaching a crisis in food production. Traditional farming methods are threatened by dwindling fresh water supplies, pollution of ground water and contamination by pesticides and chemical waste. There is a solution, rapidly developing and one which may benefit areas of society that are sorely in need of encouragement. AEROPONIC FARMING.Aeroponic Farming uses less than 1/10th the amount of water that ground farming does and is totally organic, free of pesticides and chemicals. The crops can grow more than 3 times as fast and are grown close to where they are used. They are fresher and require less transit and less cold storage before they are consumed. Urban farms, (acres of crops in huge “factory farm” buildings) are now serving nearby cities, and rapidly growing around the world.
The Sensible Sages is initiating a program, creating a “model” Aeroponic Farm in South- East Los Angeles. We will be partnering with local groups in creating a “farm” that will serve the local area, be a model for the simplicity of replication in nearby areas. In addition, it will train local personnel to learn the farming techniques and make them valuable assets to the rapidly growing Urban Farm industry.
The Sage’s Career Forums are a series of career oriented “talks”, led by respected professionals in a great variety of vocations, designed to give students an insight into the life and rewards that each provide. They will have a wide range of possibilities, to allow young audiences to consider each talk as a path to their own life choices. Ranging from “A- Architecture to Z-Zoology, each will be led by a speaker who has lived the career, from humble start to achievement.
These Sage Career Forums will be presented to Los Angeles students, ranging from Middle to High School, with audience participation in a Q & A period. They will be videotaped and edited into a classroom length and the ensuing “library” will be offered to schools around the LA County and beyond.
Each subject will be accompanied with a web-site, designed to present a variety of links that will allow any interested student to discover much more about each field. If their interest is substantial, they may pursue the subject further with a series of steps that will bring them to the attention of the Career Forums committee. Individual counseling may ensue with an optimal goal of internships and scholarships in their chosen field.

The Sensible Sages have always believed that improving medical support for the entire Los Angeles Community is a vital part of our mission. In that regard, we have established this Committee to investigate and design projects that can best accomplish this purpose.
FREE CLINIC CONSULTS: One of the first projects The Sensible Sages undertook is now well underway. Initiated buy our Board Member, Dr. Marshall Grode, the Sages enlisted the Sherry Lansing Foundation, The MAVEN Project and UC Health Services, to bring highly specialized medical consultations to the Free Clinics in Los Angeles. Valued “Specialists”, in many medical fields, donate time to this service and through the good offices of the MAVEN Project, are connected to Free Clinic Doctors , donating free consultations in complex medical cases.
RURAL MEDICINE: Currently, the Sages are investigating the severe lack of medical attention in the “Rural” areas of Los Angeles County and vicinity. To address this problem, the Sages are designing a program that will enable Registered Nurses to take the rigid training necessary for them to become Nurse Practitioners.
Nurse Practitioners can perform many of the functions of a Medical Doctor in treating and prescribing for patients. In coordination with the California State Office of Rural Health, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other Rural Health Agencies , the Sages will seek to work with local authorities in rural areas to provide the funding for Scholarship Programs. After being vetted and trained, the graduate Nurse Practitioners will spend a defined period of practice in the rural area that supported their advanced medical education.
The Sensible Sages Medical Committee is well-aware of the breadth of the needs for medical support in many under-served areas of Los Angeles County and will consider additional programs that can provide these services. Emergency medicine; catastrophe prescription services; on-site field support in homeless areas, and other programs are being discussed.
